New Zealand's first Flip Out Trampoline Arena has opened in Rotorua, just in time for Christmas.

Owners Renae Baker and Stephen Thompson held a private opening function for around 100 family, friends and tradespeople last night and were rearing to go for their first official day's trading.

They spent a year working on the project after leaving their full-time jobs to concentrate on the trampoline arena, based at 12 Ti St.

Flip Out Rotorua features a main adult arena, under-eight "lil flippers tramps", a large foam pit, two wall runners and two jump basketball hoops. There are also three party rooms for hire, a cafe and a viewing platform. It also features three gigantic murals painted by local artist Shannon Wright.

Flip Out is an Australia-based franchise with about 35 arenas worldwide.

"Now I really know what 'blood, sweat and tears' really means," Mr Thompson said.

He said with almost 5000 followers already on Facebook they had no problem selling vouchers for Christmas and had to print more due to high demand. "We're pretty sure everyone's going to love the place." To date they have employed 24 staff to run the business for 12 hours a day, seven days a week at the 1000sq m site.

The couple said once they were up and running, they would introduce special rates for "mums 'n bubs" sessions and start "lil ninja" and adult agility classes, with slam-dunk and dodgeball competitions.

Flip Out New Zealand franchisor Adam Hetherington previously told the Rotorua Daily Post the company was excited to have Rotorua as the location for New Zealand's first Flip Out franchise.

"The city is known for adventure and excitement and Flip Out will contribute to that.

"We are fortunate to have sold the franchise to a local couple who have a strong passion for the business, the people and the area," Mr Hetherington said.
