Young Achievers 2018 by Andrew Warner Photography

The future of Rotorua is in good hands if last night's Rotorua Young Achievers ceremony is anything to go by.

The awards are in their 28th year and this year more than 2100 students were nominated by their schools for their contribution to their school and community, academic, cultural, sports and leadership skills.

The exhibition of photos, taken by Rotorua photographer Andrew Warner, will be on display at Pak n Save from October 23 to November 9 and at the Rotorua Library from the November 12 until December 7.

Since the awards have been going, more than 1250 students have been nominated and photographed.

This year the students themselves took responsibilty for the awards, with some students taking over MC duties and some performing.

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick said there was a range of community participation.

"It was a night showcasing our youth talents in so many ways.

"It began with a pohiri by Rotorua Lakes High and moved at a sharp pace.

"We were collectively proud of what our schools and parents enable in their children's learning pathways. What we saw bodes well for our school community.

"Young Achievers ran the programme their way. It was crisp and professional.

"The photos and video that Andrew Warner produced were pictures that told 46 stories. We look forward to growing our own alumni stories - a new touch added by Pita Anaru the deputy chairman of Ngāti Whakaue Education Endowment Trust," Chadwick said.

Warner said it took two-and-a-half weeks to photograph and video all 46 students.

"They're amazing kids," Warner said.

Rotorua Boys' High School head boy Hohaia Macfarlane, who also performed an aria at the event, said it was an honour to be among other Young Achievers alumni.

"Since Year 9 I've seen all the Boys' High young achievers on the walls of our main building. Quite an honour to think I'll be up there myself."
