Rotorua and the surrounding region hold 10 spots in the AA 101 Must-Dos for Kiwis list, but do not yet have any ratings in the top 20.
But it is not too late and Rotorua attractions, residents and visitors are being encouraged to go online and rate their favourite things to
do in the region.
The Polynesian Spa was the area's top ranking attraction at 21, followed by Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs and Spa at 22 and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing at 23.
AA compiled its original list of the top 101 things to do in New Zealand in 2006 and has put that on its website, allowing people to add new suggestions and to rate existing items, creating a new, updated 101 Must Dos list.
An spokeswoman told The Daily Post rankings would change as votes came in and the aim was to inspire Kiwis to get out and experience the best of what their own country has to offer, encouraging domestic travel.
"It is about helping Kiwis become more aware of what there is to do in their own backyard."
This fits with the Rotorua Tourism Committee's goal of raising awareness in the domestic market, making people realise Rotorua is worth coming back to, and Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing general manager Don Gunn said domestic visitor nights had come back strongly in February.
His organisation has created links in its social media sites to encourage people to get involved in the AA survey and increase Rotorua's standing.
"We are encouraging people to vote for their favourite Rotorua things to do. We will use this opportunity to push up our sector."
Gunn said AA Travel was a popular place for New Zealanders to search for travel information and Destination Rotorua had already run one very successful joint competition with AA.
"We got an additional 5500 people on our database from that."
He was disappointed Rotorua did not feature higher than 21st in the main 101 Must Dos list, but said the region had fared better in some categories.
At midday yesterday, Rotorua and Taupo had a strong showing in the hot pools and spas category and the cycle trails section.
Polynesian Spa took fifth in the hot pools and spas category, followed by Taupo De Bretts Hot Springs and Spa at sixth, Hells Gate Wai Ora Spa at seventh and Waikite Valley Thermal Pools at 13th.
Under cycling trails, Tongariro's 42 Traverse was the top local inclusion at fourth. Whakarewarewa Forest, erroneously listed as Taupo, came in sixth and Taupo's Craters of the Moon took eighth place. Other categories with strong local performances include snow and ice - with Turoa and Whakapapa skifields ranked second.
