New Year's Eve isn't too far away and while many know how they will ring in 2012, there are plenty still undecided. The Daily Post entertainment reporter Kristin Macfarlane looks at what events are on to celebrate the new year.

Whether you're a reggae or rock fan, plan to spend New Year's Eve with your family, want to have a big night out with thousands of others or dance the night away, there are plenty of options.

It seems Rotorua residents are relaxed when it comes to planning their big New Year's Eve night, many saying they make plans at the last minute and just do whatever their friends are doing.

The city's annual lakefront mardigras event, this year dubbed NZCT Rock The Lake, will feature up-and-coming and established performers.

Organiser Monty Morrison says the early family-orientated show will start at 6.15pm before the main show at 8pm. The concert will end with a fireworks display at midnight.

Those who want to get out of town don't have to go too far - there are plenty of events and concerts around the Bay of Plenty.

One of the bigger events will be the festivities at Mt Maunganui with up to 35,000 people usually attending.

Tauranga City Council event delivery manager Penny Mitropoulos says people from around the country attend the celebrations at Mt Maunganui beach.

This year they will have a main stage and a second stage featuring performers as well as activities for families in between, plus a fireworks display.

There are also other events and activities happening around the beach in the lead up to the main event.

Exodus 2012 at Papamoa is also set to be a big New Year's Eve events, a reggae festival featuring Katchafire, House Of Shem, 1814, Ardijah, Sons Of Zion, 3 Houses Down, Foundation, Tomorrow People, NRG Rising, Vintage, Chad 'The Boogie Man' Chambers, DJ Hemz with the MC Te Hamua Nikora.

Organiser Ara Adams-Tamatea says tickets for the R18 event are selling well, with the limited 600 VIP tickets already sold out. They still have general admission tickets with up to 6000 expected.

He says there wasn't really a reggae event for fans to enjoy on New Year's Eve in the Bay of Plenty so he organised one. He has resource consent to hold concerts on the site for the next five years but plans to wait until after the first one before organising anything else.

Also at Papamoa, The Feelers will be playing at the Papamoa Tavern on New Year's Eve as part of their Hope Nature Forgives Summer Tour, promoting their hit album Hope Nature Forgives.

Rotorua

If you are in Rotorua this New Year's Eve, the annual NZCT Rock The Lake concert will be held at the Lakefront. From 6.15pm the family fun show will be held with the main show scheduled to start from 8pm and run until midnight with a fireworks finale. The event will feature up-and-coming and established performers who will be revealed soon.

Papamoa

Exodus 2012 is a reggae festival being held at Te Tumu Kaituna 14 Reserve, Bell Road, Papamoa. The line-up for the event includes Katchafire, House Of Shem, 1814, Ardijah, Sons Of Zion, 3 Houses Down, Foundation, Tomorrow People, NRG Rising, Vintage, Chad 'The Boogie Man' Chambers, DJ Hemz with the MC Te Hamua Nikora. This is an R18 event with a licensed bar on premises. Gates open at 12pm on December 31 and the festival closes at 1.30am on New Year's Day. Tickets range in price from $60 plus booking fees. Online tickets are available from Eventfinder.co.nz or at Ticketek outlets.

The Feelers New Year's Eve 2011 concert will be held at the Papamoa Tavern on Domain Rd. There will be a DJ playing from 4pm in the garden bar, with a lead up band to get you in the party mood before The Feelers take the stage and help bring in the New Year. Closing time is 1am.

Mt Maunganui

Before your night-time New Year's Eve celebrations, people of all ages can head to the HRV Cup Twenty20 Cricket - Knights vs Wizards at Blake Park, Maunganui Rd, Mt Maunganui. Tickets cost $20 for an adult, under 16s are $5 and under fives are free. Tickets are available through Ticketek. The Northern Knights are taking on the Canterbury Wizards in a mid-afternoon New Year's Eve bash between 2pm and 5pm. This will be a family friendly event

with a supervised kids area with bouncy castles, picnics are encouraged and plenty of cricket action to enjoy. Gates open at 12.30pm.

Mt Maunganui is traditionally a big party hotspot for New Year's Eve revellers. This year is unlikely to be any different with bands playing on the main stage and a second stage along the beach and amusement rides and activities for families in between each stage. A fireworks display will also be held. About 30,000-35,000 people attend.
