Up to 80 people gather at the inter-church event on the first Sunday of every month.
Each of the six churches hosts the hymn-along twice a year.
The hymn-along features 14 hymns and are sometimes accompanied by either organ or piano. Mr Bowen said most churches these days had modern music that some people might not be able to sing along to.
"This week, we're at the Salvation Army, so we'll have their band. There'll be resounding music."
The 14 songs are chosen at the end of the previous hymn-along. This week, the list of hymns includes classics such as Praise My Soul, The King of Heaven, On a Hill Faraway and Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah.
The hymn-along this month is on Sunday at the Salvation Army Church on Old Taupo Rd.
The event, which is open to anyone, starts with a cup of tea at 2.30pm and finishes at 3.45pm.
