It has drawn some controversy this summer with its Welcome to Rotovegas sign but readers have given Skyline Rotorua the big thumbs up when it comes to how essential the tourist attraction is to Rotorua.

Skyline is one of the first attractions visitors see as they travel in from the north. As well as the gondola, which takes people part way up Mt Ngongotaha for beautiful vistas of our city, the business has grown to be a place for wining and dining, speedsters and relaxing.

Volcanic Winery has a wine tasting room at the top and the marketplace restaurant serves international food to cater for all tastes. Skyline is probably best known for the luge experience - ride up the mountain slowly and speed down in a plastic cart.

The luge track is one of five that Skyline operates around the world, making it a must-do when in our city.

But if you're not into luge-ing, there is still plenty to enjoy. There is the Skyswing, an exhilarating ride 50 metres above the ground, which is just as enjoyable to watch as experience.

There's the Skyvue, a 4D ride of the planet, the Jelly Belly Shop and HeliPro Helicopters. Skyline also has a range of walking tracks where visitors can take a stroll through exotic and native plantings.

The Rotorua Daily Post Essential 50 lists the city's must-see, must-do and must-try activities and experiences thanks to reader nominations. We'll be highlighting one every day over summer.
