Beehive
Rotorua Musical Theatre
Casa Blanca Theatre What struck me about this saucy, buzzing-with-energy musical was how on earth did the six cast members remember all 43 songs and different dance moves for each song?
Rotorua Musical Theatre's production of Beehive began with an introduction to our entertainers, "The Fabulous Beehive Girls".
The girls playedsix very different characters having a great time reminiscing about and singing songs from the girl groups of the 1960s and 1970s. They wear sparkly tops with the longest eyelashes, the shortest skirts and the highest hair and heels you can imagine. But they can pull it off, and you can't help noticing they all have great legs.
First off, the girls sang Doo Wah Diddy Diddy while spraying their hair with hairspray. Then they drifted from song to song, chatting about the history of the songs, fretting about boyfriends and taking turns to lead songs and support each other with almost always in-sync dance moves.
My favourite song was River Deep - Mountain High, originally by Ike and Tina Turner, which the girls did an awesome job with.
Sultry redhead Trixie (Kimberley Chapman) came out dressed as Tina Turner in a revealing yet awesome red tassel dress. I found myself singing along to I Will Survive, We Are Family and It's Rainin' Men. I heard the audience singing along to Proud Mary and Downtown. Beehive is a show for anyone who fancies a night of music, remembering all those old classic songs.
