Ten-piece original funk powerhouse Batucada Sound Machine (BSM), popular covers band The Monroes, a laser light show and a video tribute to the year gone by will be part of New Year's Eve celebrations in Taupo.

The free event at Unison Amphitheatre in Riverside Park runs from 6pm with a bouncy castle, face-painting and food and beverage stalls.

The live music kicks off at 8pm with some local talent, before BSM takes the stage at 9pm. Then The Monroes will perform from 10.45pm and keep crowds dancing until it is time to welcome in the new year, which will be done in style with a laser light show.

The Auckland-based BSM is renowned for getting crowds moving with a percussion-heavy rhythm section, blazing horns, chunky guitars and soulful vocals which fuse Brazilian, funk, hip-hop, afro-beat and Pacific-soul influences.

While based in New Zealand, BSM has captivated audiences around the world including at Womad (UK) and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Last year and this year, the band toured Europe, performing more than 50 shows in eight countries.

At home they have performed at events including Splore, Parihaka, Rhythm & Vines and Big Day Out.

Their debut album Rhythm and Rhyme (2007) quickly climbed to the top of the Independent NZ Music charts. Their latest album Don't Keep Silent is due for release here early next year.

District events manager Nick Reader said attracting a band like BSM was proof that Taupo's reputation for hosting top-class events was growing.

"BSM are amazing live, you cannot afford to miss seeing this band for free and on such an special occasion. This year's NYE concert is set to be the best yet."

Four-piece cover band The Monroes are a favourite at Finn MacCuhal's Irish Pub. Their explosive energy and extensive repertoire will get you on your feet.

The night will also feature a locally produced video review of the year. Food and drink will be available but families are welcome to bring a picnic. No alcohol as it is an alcohol-free event.
