The Rotorua Night Market is planning a big event for Matariki, with all sorts of attractions. Matariki at the Night Market will be held on Thursday from 5pm.
The event promises to have something for everyone with a lantern procession, chef demonstration, a street theatre performance, Maori string games forthe kids and carving demonstrations.
Further entertainment on the night will be provided by the Fifteen Stars Cook Island Dance Group, the Philippine Club of Rotorua and the Selwyn School kapa haka group.
In addition to the health and well-being stalls there will also be plenty of food stalls to sample and enjoy.
Matariki, also referred to as Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, is a star cluster and can be seen in the eastern sky sometime around the shortest day of the year.
In addition to being an astronomical phenomenon, for many Maori Matariki heralds the start of a new year and is a time to come together to celebrate our past, present and future.
Exciting prizes for the family will be on offer. Matariki Rotorua has teamed up with the Rotorua Night Market to bring the event to the city.
