International rock bands the Doobie Brothers and Little River Band are heading to the central North Island.

The two bands will play at the Taupo Ampitheatre in Riverside Park on Saturday, February 4, 2012 and organisers hope the concert will be the first of an annual series.

The Doobie Brothers are American rock legends with more than 30 million records sold and hits such as Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin, and What a Fool Believes.

Little River Band has also had chart success throughout the past three decades - with classics including Cool Change, The Other Guy, and Take it Easy On Me - and is often considered to be one of Australia's most significant bands.

The concert is being put on by company Taupo Summer Concert.

Director Amanda Calvert said Taupo was an ideal location with great infrastructure, a large range of accommodation and plenty of wonderful hospitality.

"We are very excited to bring [the region] such a strong double act. The Doobie Brothers and Little River Band are legendary rock bands that we are sure will attract fans from across the generations.

"While the venue is sizeable, we'd encourage people to get in quick so they don't miss this landmark musical event."

She said because the concert would finish about 6.30pm, people would be able to walk into town afterwards and enjoy the abundant hospitality.

Taupo District Council chief executive Rob Williams said the concert would be a great addition to the summer events calendar.

"What a fantastic opportunity for Taupo to host yet another high-profile event in our district," Mr Williams said.

A special number of pre-release tickets would be made available to Taupo people at $79 from next Wednesday, September 7, at the I-Site in town.

General ticket sales of $89 would go on sale through Ticketek on Monday, September 12.

Children under 11 would be admitted free of charge when accompanied by a ticketholder.

Gates would open at noon and the concert would be kicked off at 1pm by a yet-to-be-named New Zealand band.

Little River Band would begin performing at 3pm, the Doobie Brothers at 5pm, and the concert would finish at 6.30pm.

A range of food, beer and wine would be on sale at the event.

Concertgoers would also able to take their own food and non-alcoholic beverages.
