In our house, we have a three layer rule: people must be wearing three layers and remain cold before the heating is turned on.
Regimented as it sounds, our power bill has never strayed above $35 per week and I think this is partly down to the three layer rule.
During the colder months, you will find our boys with vests, t-shirts and a jumper. In the evenings, my husband and I will snuggle with a blanket as our third layer.
Only then will we turn on the heat pump if we are still cold.
Some days, the 3 layer rule means that we don't even need to resort to chomping on the power bill.
During the summer months, $35 per week is more than sufficient to cover our energy bill and the surplus account payment is stored up until winter when the additional lighting, and heat pump pay a toll on our account balance.
