Shundar super top, $229.

Subtle show and tell attracts attention with just enough bare skin. No need to go the whole Miley.

Sheer fabrics are a trend of many personalities - from sport luxe to ladylike elegance and everything between. They've been making their mark on runways and red carpets for some time now, so if you're looking for a different way to bare some skin this spring, sheer garments are the answer.

Sheer items of clothing allow you to highlight your best features in a subtle way - be it your arms, legs, bust or torso. They also give you the power to decide just how much you reveal, depending on how you layer them with other garments. For a covered-up, elegant look, go for full-length sheer dresses or trousers over shorts or slips. Alternatively, sheer panels in garments are another way to show a little skin without going all out. Sheer backs are common on tops, tunics and jackets, as are sheer sleeves.

Sheer fabrics add depth and texture to your outfit, so work well with monotone looks. Layer them up over lace or under knits, but try to keep silhouettes clean and minimise accessories. If the thought of baring all leaves you shuddering, try an embellished sheer garment, like the organza jacket and skirt in Glassons' new limited edition EDT range. Layering a sheer shirt or blouse under a blazer is a great way to wear the trend at work. The blazer keeps it conservative, but you can always take it off at drinks later for a more risque look.

Remember to balance out the sheer elements with opaque ones, and add feminine fabrics such as lace, tulle and chiffon. Above all, remember that the aim is not to shock but to flatter.

Be selective about what you hide and what you reveal and don't wear anything you're not 100 per cent comfortable in.
