This is my favourite time of year for fashion. It's not freezing, so we're not stuck under heavy jumpers, big coats and thick tights. But it's not so hot that you can't still get some wear out of that "investment" trench coat bought at the start of the season.

Shops are also having winter clear-outs - I picked up a dress from Hailwood that I've been coveting for months for almost $300 off.

The key to getting your outfits right during this "in-between" phase is layering. Plan for every stage of the day - a dress with a cardigan you can discard later in the day, or a tunic over tights and boots, with a coat you can wear before it warms up.

If you can, choose layers of different colours to add interest. Black on black should be banished at the first sign of spring.

The key to layering is not to choose anything too bulky - it is very unflattering. If you're going with bigger items, keep the rest of the outfit sleek. Skinny jeans or jeggings are perfect because they are fitted enough to allow you to have more material on top, such as a tunic or drapey cardigan. This is especially true if you have a long pair of black boots over the top.

Merino long-sleeved tops are a great base item for a layered outfit. They are warm but add next-to-no bulk and can usually be worn on their own once the day warms up. Wrap up in a colourful scarf and consider swapping your coat for a cape - not for the faint-hearted!

Preppy jumpers and cardigans are still on-trend. If you're brave, you can wear them with a pretty blouse and high-waisted pencil pants. This is quite a retro look, so be prepared to make a statement.

Jersey dresses can be dressed up or down and are very versatile.

Chambray is back in this year - to avoid looking too much like a relic of the 1990s, keep everything else plain and create an impact with your accessories.
