The concert by Russian violinist Sergey Malov and pianist Michael Houston at the Concert Chamber on Sunday was undoubtedly a winner.
Malov won last year's Michael Hill International Violin Competition and now, in a fine partnership with one of our leading pianists, he was showing off his extraordinary skills andmusical temperament in a 16-recital tour.
Even at this start of the tour the pair indicated a close understanding as they explored the depths of a demanding programme.
In Gyftiko (Gypsy), by the New Zealand composer John Psathas, a compulsory solo piece in the competition and a stern test of instrumental adroitness, it was a marvel to watch such lithe grace in fluid bowing and adroit fingering.
Brahms' Sonata No1, a calm and reflective work, was notable for violin and piano playing which was expressive but without heaviness.
