"Fat Kid Fights Back" is the latest YouTube clip taking the world by storm and if you've ever been bullied or witnessed the meanies in the act you'll be with me when I say good on him.
Whether you've been bullied or witnessed it, I'm sure nearly everyone can say it's
not a nice feeling _ and if you've been a bully, well, shame on you!
I for one remember being on the end of the bully stick at school and I heartily salute the poor kid.
A question put to readers on The New Zealand Herald website asked what people thought a person should do if they were being bullied _ 49 per cent said they should tell their parents or teacher and 51 per cent said they should hit the bully back.
While I don't condone violence, I hardly think telling on your bully will get them to stop _ the little turd is obviously asking for a square punch to the jaw.
Or a body slam to the concrete.
I remember teachers at school constantly telling students to go straight to them if any
nonsense was going on. But I also remember after the school bell rang that same "nonsense'' got a whole lot worse because now the bully knew you were a nark!
The only way to deal with bullies is to get to the root of the problem.
I've come up with a few ideas on why people pick on other people; one is that they're secretly unhappy with themselves, they're jealous of your awesomeness, they're trying to impress their peers or they're rubber and you're quite clearly glue.
One thing is for sure though, shying away and letting them get away with it won't get
you anywhere.
It's sad to hear some students would rather just shrink back and spend their school
years hiding in the corner than deal with the issue head on.
It's even sadder to know that bullying doesn't stop at school if people don't learn to be assertive.
Maths and English aren't the only things children need to learn _ learning to stand up and defend themselves when they're in trouble is just as important, whether they learn that in the classroom or in the playground.
