Mumford & Sons' back-to-basics sound can be nicely summed up with lyrics from this debut album's best moment _ "With a white blank page, and a swelling rage''.
With a stripped-back Celtic-indie folk style,
Mumford & Sons still manage to employ banjo, mandolinand double bass alongside the usual drums and guitars to create rich layers of music.
Lead single Little Lion Man and White Blank Page are highlights nestled among a few quieter tracks and a few more numbers of their calibre would have been nice. But no matter how soft the songs get, Marcus Mumford's vocals retain an intense passion. It's a sound that would be in its element on stage, but this album conveys that well enough to tide you over until you get that chance to see them live.
