23) Hit it
Squash builds your cardiovascular fitness, is fast, hard work and sweaty. It's a good way to burn some calories, release some tension and have fun. There are a few places to give it a go in Rotorua.
24) Fast and furious
Indoor netball can be a mixed sport that is fast and helps you keep fit while having fun in a social environment. There are a few leagues, including at Waiariki Community Recreation Centre.
25) Get your kicks
Taekwondo strengthens the body and improves health through exercise and conditioning. It will boost muscle tone and strength, enhance flexibility and sharpen reflexes. Classes available in Rotorua include the Feast Taekwondo class at Owhata Primary School Hall in Brent Rd. Develop your fitness, flexibility, endurance, balance, speed and strength and learn self defence. It's for all ages. Rhee taekwondo is taught at Rotorua Intermediate.
26) Martial defences
Aikido is a Japanese martial art that can help improve confidence and self-esteem and help you keep up a good level of fitness. 27) Head to the gym
If you want to work out indoors, want professional help with your weight loss and muscle toning and want the extra support from other members, then it's time to join a local gym. The benefits of joining a gym is the help you can get from staff and personal trainers, having a venue to work out indoors in case the weather is too wet and all of the equipment - cardio and weights - available to members. A few gyms are around to choose from so visit them
and talk to staff about what each one offers to find out which one suits you best.
28) Hit the pool
Aqua-jogging is something people of all sizes, abilities and ages can do and is especially good for people who are older or have limited mobility. It's low impact to the muscles but effective due to the water resistance. This combination avoids muscle soreness, stress fractures and aching joints. To start aqua-jogging, only swimwear and an aqua-jogging belt are needed. Belts can be hired from the Rotorua Aquatic Centre. They help with maintaining the proper upright position and support you in the water. Other water-based aerobics-styled classes include one specifically for pregnant women, held at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre throughout the week. Contact them for more information.
29) Stroke of genius
Swimming is great exercise and uses all parts of your body. It's effective and will help you to keep in good shape, lose weight and remain healthy. Rotorua is home to some beautiful lakes, so why not enjoy swimming in one or two of them.
30) Leg it
A walk, jog or run can be a good way to help burn calories. While walking is low impact, if you want to do something more physical, jogging or running allows for that. Walking and running are said to produce endorphins that make you feel happy and confident. If you don't want to run on the roads, Rotorua has plenty of tracks to enjoy around the lakes or in the Redwoods.
