1. Head out to one of Rotorua's many lakes and take a scenic walk around it, take the family out fishing or go for a picnic. There is plenty to do.

2. Dress up and take part in the Spookers Zombie Walk on Saturday at the Soundshell Market on the lake front. Costs $5 per person, registration from 10am until 12pm.

3. Head to Arawa Park for Plate Day for an exciting day of racing. Entry is free and there is plenty of children's entertainment. Women are encouraged to dress up, with prizes to be won. From 12pm until 5pm and all ages are welcome.

4. Rotorua SPCA fund-raising event with AWHI Credit Union. Blues band Cairo will be performing at the After Dark Cabaret, a glass of wine and nibbles are provided. Tickets cost $25 per person and can be purchased from AWHI Credit Union, Rotorua SPCA and After Dark Cabaret. Starts at 8pm on Saturday.

5. The Gypsy Traveller's Fair is back in Rotorua for the long weekend. Come and have a browse and have a look at a group of true road folk who run the fair as a co-operative. With free entry the fair runs from 9am until 5pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Village Green.

6. See white water rafters in action at the pre-world championship event. The sprint and head to head race will be on the Kaituna today. Tomorrow, the slalom will be raced in Kawerau on the Tarawera River. The finale will be the Down River race on the Rangitaiki on Sunday.

7. The New Zealand Maori rugby league tournament will be running tomorrow and Sunday at Puketawhero Park. 20 teams from New Zealand and Australia are taking part and spectators are welcome.

8. If you're in the Eastern Bay, check out the Ngati Awa Festival, a family-friendly concert featuring Maisey Rika, 1814, Yesiah, MC Hazadus & Tribal Connections, Emma Paki, AS, Miss Black and Tait Kora. Free, at Whakatane Rugby Park. Festival opens at 9am, entertainment begins at 11:30am. Free entry.

9. National Maori hockey tournament at Smallbone Park which runs today, tomorrow and Sunday.

10. Mini cars will be zipping up and down the Village Green tomorrow, head on down to see New Zealand's best Mini cars. You can even join in on the fun with Mini drag racing, tyre changing and a blind rally. There are heaps of spot prizes up for grabs and most of the events are free. From 8am until 1pm.
