Rotorua International Airport chairman Ray Cook said Mr Rhodes' appointment came after a rigorous selection process, with more than 70 people applying for the position.
"The role of airport chief executive is a critical one both for the successful operation of the airport itself, and also for the local community and business sector, particularly the tourism industry," Mr Cook said. "It is a complex role, requiring engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Government agencies, local councils, iwi, residents, business people, tourism groups, airlines, visitors and many more.
"Alastair brings extensive airline, commercial and management experience to the role, including strong existing stakeholder relationships.
"These will be a critical factor as the airport operation matures and moves into a new phase of development."
Mr Rhodes said that he was delighted to have been appointed to the role and is looking forward to moving with his family to Rotorua.
"The role of Rotorua International Airport chief executive is an exciting and challenging one.
"The airport has clearly seen extensive growth and development in recent years.
"I am looking forward to taking the airport - and its community with it - into a new phase of development that contributes to the region's growth."
