Lynne Ogilvie - 35 years at KFC and loving it

Lynne Ogilvie has cooked and served chicken at Rotorua's KFC restaurant for almost 35 years and plans to see out her working life there.

When did you start working at KFC?

I started at KFC [then Kentucky Fried Chicken] in August of 1979. The store was right next door to where it is now.

Why did you want to work there?

I had a young family and I wanted to support them.

What have been some highlights of your career?

I only worked part-time initially as I had a night job too. I like the job for its stability and security, and I've made some friends and met other mums in the community.

What are some of the biggest changes you've experienced over that time?

When I first started my boss told me to practise speaking in a low voice at home because my pitch was too high for the microphones! Now the technology's a lot better and everything is quicker and easier to do.

The store itself has changed a lot. It used to be a hatch store, and we used to only sell chicken and corn. It's been through three major renovations in the past three decades and eventually became a restaurant selling burgers and all sorts. I love the new store, it's great. It's really come a long way from the little hatch store. Now it's somewhere with good atmosphere where you can sit down and relax.

Do you still eat KFC?

I like the wicked wings and the drumsticks. I only eat KFC once a week, but my husband eats it every day. He's a thoroughbred runner and needs his energy.

What's your current role and how long do you think you'll stay?

Team member. I'm only three years away from retiring and I'll stay.
