HIGH ACHIEVER Nick Dallimore, Rotorua District Council economic projects manager

A strong background in events and venue management is helping Nick Dallimore forge ahead in his new roles with Rotorua District Council and the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce.

Nick has taken on the position of economic projects manager in the council's newly-restructured economic and regulatory services department. "My focus is on driving programmes offering economic benefits, particularly within the central business district, building on the success of Eat Streat and the Rotorua Night Market projects."

But he first came to Rotorua and the council in quite a different role.

"I was recruited by Rotorua District Council as the inaugural general manager and creator of Events & Venues Rotorua, responsible for driving a number of significant Rotorua development projects including the International Stadium, Arts Village, Convention Centre/Civic Theatre and the Energy Events Centre."

Nick took this role after a 20-year career in event and venue management. Having completed a planning degree at Massey University, his first job was as the assistant manager at Palmerston North Showgrounds, leading him down a career path he never envisaged, managing stadiums, theatres and convention centres.

While general manager of the Napier War Memorial Convention Centre, Nick was involved in managing the construction of the centre and the Napier Municipal Theatre and became involved in the events industry.

He became an inaugural member of Australia's Venue Management School and then an executive member and then president of the Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand. His involvement also moved beyond New Zealand shores as a councillor for Venue Management Association Australasia & South Pacific.

Nick spent some time in Auckland as chief executive of Ticketek New Zealand and has consulted on projects around the country, co-promoting with the Royal New Zealand Ballet and spearheading New Zealand artist touring networks. He still serves on many community charitable trusts.

As well as taking on the economic projects manager position, Nick is one of two new members of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce executive in 2011. He sees this as an opportunity to work with the chamber to help align common goals in the development of Rotorua. "I have had extensive experience in developing business models, working within associations, training and developing industry best practice and hope to both add value to the Chamber and learn further from working with this talented team."
