Ten people have been injured in a head-on crash near Rotorua.
Of the 10, three were taken to hospitals in private cars, St John said.
The collision, between a truck and van, closed State Highway 30 last night near Lake Rotoehu and resulted in serious injury.
The crash scene was cleared and road reopened about 8.30pm.
Ten St John vehicles attended the incident and treated 10 patients. St John transported seven patients to Tauranga, Rotorua and Whakatāne Hospitals.
Two patients were taken to Rotorua Hospital with one now stable, while the other was transferred to Christchurch Hospital, a Lakes DHB spokeswoman said.
Two people had serious injuries, six moderate and two minor.
The collision between the truck and car happened between Morehu and Manawahe Rd.
The crash was reported at 5.13pm.
Earlier reports indicated there were multiple injuries, a police spokeswoman said.
"The road is closed and those travelling south to Rotorua are advised to take the Tauranga route.
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area, if possible."
Fire and Emergency spokesman Craig Dally said four fire trucks had been sent to the crash between a truck and a van.
Dally said five people were initially trapped but four had been cut free.
The fifth person was still trapped but crews were working on getting them out, Dally said.
One person was moderately injured and the rest suffered moderate to minor injuries, according to Dally, but St John could not confirm the status at this stage.
