A woman has been airlifted to hospital after a horse fell on her during a riding event in Taneatua in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

The 53-year-old suffered a fracture to her lower leg after the horse she was riding yesterday reared up on a steep hill causing her to fall off with the horse then falling on her.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was sent to the area about 2pm where the woman was hover loaded into the helicopter and flown to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.
