A car has left the road and ended up on its roof following a crash south of Rotorua.

A police media spokeswoman said the crash happened at the intersection of State Highway 5 and Waimangu Rd just before 4.40pm.

Two people have been pulled out of the car.

She said a woman and a baby involved were "okay" but distressed. Both had minor injuries.

A Rotorua Daily Post photographer at the scene said one car was down a bank and on its roof, and was partially crushed.

He said the car was empty.

Another car was in the northbound lane and appeared to have sustained only minor damage.

Fire and ambulance had left the scene and police were picking up debris, including broken road signs, he said.

Traffic is flowing normally.

Police earlier reported the crash involved a truck, however this was not the case.
