Vandals in a car have torn up a section of Kauae Cemetery leaving locals outraged.

A Rotorua woman who went to visit the grave of her grandmother on Sunday morning discovered someone had driven a car into the cemetery and proceeded to pull "donuts" in an area set aside for new graves.

The driver almost hit a number of headstones before leaving the area.

It is not known if any other damage has been reported at the cemetery located on Ngongotaha Rd.

Rotorua Lakes Council staff are heading to the cemetery to see what they can do to fix the mess.

The cemetery is managed by the council and a trust set up to maintain the site.

Photographs of the damage have gone viral on social media with many people expressing disgust and outrage at the actions of the driver or drivers.

The Rotorua Daily Post will update the story as soon as more information is available.
