A high speed police chase in the Awakeri and Edgecumbe area ended safely this afternoon and resulted in one person being arrested.

Senior Sergeant Denton Grimes said the chase got up to speeds of 140km/h.

"At that stage police abandoned the pursuit because of the speed and manner of driving of the offending vehicle."

Mr Grimes said the vehicle had allegedly been involved in a petrol drive-off within the Whakatane area.

The police continued to patrol the area around Edgecumbe and Te Teko, he said.

Mr Grimes said information received from a member of the public led to the vehicle and driver being found at a property in Edgecumbe.
