A solid 5-0 victory over Waitemata Reserves on Saturday gave FC Whangarei the boost they needed going into a tough Queen's Birthday double-header.
Whangarei coach Trevor Apledoorn said it was good to get two successive wins in the Federation division-one competition.
"It wasn't always the most attractive football but we took our chances and made it count and that's something we haven't always done this season," he said.
Steve Yeo scored the opening goal but, despite enjoying the majority of possession, the score was only 1-0 at the break.
Keeper Dean Keogh pulled off a couple of good saves late in the spell to boast a clean sheet but the visitors' luck changed for the better in the second half.
Yeo doubled his total and then Steve Crowley scored a third to finish off Waitemata's spirit, before Adam Tremaine and Colin Walker scored two further goals.
In the Northland Premier competition, Kaikohe maintained their lead with a 2-0 win over Bay Cosmos. The game was close throughout with Cosmos trailing by a single goal and pushing forward for the equaliser when they were caught by a breakaway goal with time almost up on the clock.
Marist had the lucky escape of the round after trailing Kamo 0-1 with 10 minutes to go in their match but two quick goals saw them record a 2-1 win.
Onerahi beat Madhatters 5-2, while Kerikeri maintained their second position with a 5-0 win over Tikipunga and, in the final match of the round, Central Brown narrowly defeated FC Whangarei Reserves 2-1.
In division-one matches, Madhatters Green stayed on top with an 8-1 thrashing of Kerikeri, while Madhatters Black beat Bay Cosmos reserves 4-2.
Kamo Reserves beat Marist Reserves 2-0, while Bream Bay cruised in 5-0 against FC Whangarei and Central Brown destroyed Northern Wairoa 7-1.
