The top three teams in the Northland Women's Rugby competition displayed their dominance again over the weekend.
Mangonui, Moerewa and Hora Hora all notched up big wins, keeping their opponents scoreless.
Mangonui beat Mangakahia 60-0, with tryscorers including Teana Pukeroa, Katherine Semenoff-Murray, Maree Pukeroa and Lisa Ratana. Mangakahia was competitive in the forwards during the first half, but the Mangonui forwards dominated for the second spell. The Mangonui forwards broke the advantage line repeatedly, often from inside passes by first five-eighth Helena Nathan. Ratana, Maree Pukeroa and schoolgirl Natasha Baird were the players of the day.
Moerewa beat Hikurangi 32-0, scoring six tries. Shakira Ngawati was brutal in midfield, combining well with Kataraina Manuel.
Ngawati scored three tries as the Hikurangi defence struggled to contain her powerful attacks. Melody Wano, Manilla Nathan and Alexis Nankivell also dotted down, with Wano kicking one conversion.
Possession was evenly shared between the two sides, but Hikurangi failed to convert their possession into points. They threatened to score a number of times, but stout Moerewa defence held them back.
Hora Hora dished out the biggest win, beating Dargaville Old Boys 93-0. Hora Hora was looking to avenge their loss to Moerewa last week, and did so at Dargaville's expense.
Hora Hora played a well-constructed game which resulted in a massive 15 tries. Tryscorers included Ann Carter, Kimberley Aitkins, Kelly Boase, Missy Mangu and Amy Boase. Rachel Porter kicked nine conversions.
Aitkins, Carter and Rachel Blackmore were ruthless as a loose forward trio. Defence was strong throughout the team. When Dargaville threatened to score from a loose kick, it was prop Sharlena Short who made the trysaving tackle. Short and Kelly Boase were named as players of the day. Dargaville's best came from Ocean Flavell, Olwyn Jones and Les Saimona.
The competition takes a break over Anzac Weekend, but there will still be one game.
Hora Hora will host Mangakahia in a catch-up match from Round One. The game will be played at Hora Hora on Sunday 24th at 1pm.
