Twelve New Zealand records and 27 Northland records tumbled at the Northland Powerlifting Association's championships in Dargaville on Saturday.
Nineteen competitors ranging in age from 16 to 60-plus lifted overall weights of between 52kg and 700kg in squat, bench press and deadlift contests with some breaking records more than once.
Secretary Brian
Froggatt said association officials were pleased with the performance of all lifters.
The weekend competition - held at Brian's Gym - established the highest number of regional records ever set in a contest of its kind.
"The standard was very high because many lifters were in training for North Island, national and international competitions coming up," he said.
Mr Frogatt said five Northland lifters would goto the World Bench Press Championships in the Czech Republic next month.
About 15 Northlanders would compete in the North Island championships at Auckland in June and a Northland contingent was being sorted out for the national powerlifting championships at Whakatane in August.
"Everyone would have definitely qualified for the nationals in the weekend anyway," Mr Frogatt said.
More records are expected to be broken at the Northland bench press championships at ASB Gymfit Kerikeri on May 28.
