Kerikeri's Shawn Craig was so thrilled to be named in the New Zealand inline hockey open men's team that he forgot all about the bet.
When he was reminded about losing the wager he made with some of his Kerikeri Stingray teammates it was was like water running off a duck's
back.
"It all started off when I complained (to his teammates) about not being picked in last year's New Zealand team and someone said - I bet you'll make it this year," Craig said.
The bet was taken and the price of losing the the bet was shaving his head ... consequently he's feeling a little bald at the moment.
"I guess I didn't have to go through with it but I made the New Zealand team so everything else is insignificant," he said.
His selection in the 14-strong squad national squad has been his dream of his since he played his last game for the NZ under-20 team in 2002.
The down side to selection is he won't be able to play, this year at least, for his Stingrays team.
His elevation to the national squad means he has had to make the tough decision to play for the East Tamaki Sabres team in this year's competition.
"If I want to be a New Zealand representative then this is the kind of thing I've got to put up with - I've been dying to make the New Zealand team ... at any cost," he said.
"I think my level needs to step up and the only way I'm going to step up it up is by playing premier grade hockey," he said.
His Stingray team plays in the senior division and Craig said he needs to play premier hockey.
He has remained loyal to the club he started playing at seven years ago.
Even though he moved to Whangarei to live, he's travelled up to Kerikeri for practice and to play games but making the country's top team has changed his position.
"It's been hard to get the experience I've needed to make the step up into the top team because I felt a bit inadequate as a senior level player trying to match it with premier (league) players and only recently have I felt like I've been getting there," he said.
The disappointment, and of course the extra travel, is a small price to pay however and Craig hopes that after a season or two he can go back to the Stingrays and help raise the level of the game at his club.
He also hopes that by the time the Oceania Championships roll around in April, his hair will have grown back.
