She is excited for the chance to learn from "the best of the best" in urban dance choreographers, especially street dance royalty, newlyweds Mariel and Keone Madrid from the award-winning dance crew Choreo Cookies in San Diego.
"It'll be cool to see another couple who dance," Mrs Wood said.
Raising the funds for the trip was a challenge, but the pair were given a helping hand from New Zealand Communities Trust who paid for their airfares.
The rest they paid for through fundraisers.
"It was about five or six grand worth of costs."
Mrs Wood said many Kiwis miss out on hip hop dance events because they were often held in countries on the other side of the world.
"The price puts a lot of people off. It would be good if we had them in New Zealand or even in Australia," she said.
But Mrs Wood said the cost would be worth it for the company, which is home to dance troupes Encore and Kani Krew.
"We really want to be able to give back [to students]. We want to be able to give our crews good-quality training."
New Zealand hip hop dancers have done increasingly well on the world stage.
Auckland favourites ReQuest, Sorority and Bubblegum have all triumphed at the World Hip Hop Championships, and the long-established Prestige Dance Crew often place high in this and the International Battlegrounds Competition.
"With hip hop it's really important to keep up with what's new," said Mrs Wood. "We want to bring that knowledge back to the community."
