The latest work will improve mobile performance and enable access to high speed wireless broadband.
The six upgrades will bring these improvements to Moerewa, Kawakawa, Haruru Falls, Russell and Kerikeri.
Vodafone plans a further 34 upgrades to existing cell sites at Opua, Mangawhai, Dargaville, Maunu and Maunu East, Marsden Point, Portland, Tutukaka, Tikipunga, Springs Flat, Mt Hikurangi, Pakaraka, Kaikohe, Kerikeri inlet, Okaihau, Kaeo, Omapere, Rawene, Tauranga Bay, Whangaroa, Matauri Bay, Kaitaia, Coopers Beach, Awanui, Cape Karikari, Ahipara, Maungataniwha, Kaiwaka, Ruawai, Brynderwyn, Horokaka, Hikurangi, Hukerenui, and Whangaruru.
The RBI service for Northland delivers not only mobile coverage but wireless broadband via a high performance modem, adding a WiFi network to the home.
Phone calls can also be made through this service by plugging an existing landline phone directly into the modem, removing the need for a landline connection.
An additional benefit of the RBI is the extension of mobile coverage to include 4500km of New Zealand roads which until now have been without it.
State Highway 1 around Houhora and SH12 between Rawene and Kaikohe are two of the roads expected to benefit.
Vodafone communications manager Michelle Baguley said that historically the company had concentrated on residential cellphone coverage and there had been complaints from people whose cellphones wouldn't work on roads.
"There are lots of reasons to use cellphones in cars if you are not the driver," she said, citing calls to report accidents as one example.
