Dave Wilde didn't know what had happened when he woke up on the floor at the Uretiti Dump with blood gushing from his head.
He scrambled for the phone and dialled 111.
He had been assaulted and robbed.
Police are still hunting the person who knocked Mr Wilde unconscious at the Uretiti Transfer Station in Tip Rd last week. He has returned to work but fears the offender might come back.
Mr Wilde, the dump supervisor, was in the office of the refuse station when a heavy thump came from behind, knocking him out about 10am on Wednesday.
"I didn't see anyone. I didn't even hear a thing," he said.
He was the only one working at the dump at the time.
The radio had been playing and the person "must have crept in" because the blow came "completely out of the blue", he said.
Mr Wilde was struck at the back and right side of his head, leaving him with a swollen face and in a lot of pain.
"I've had a really bad concussion. I've been throwing up. I've got blurry vision in my right eye. It hasn't been a very good week," he said.
Police and emergency services responded to the man's call for help and he was taken to Whangarei Hospital by ambulance.
Whangarei police Detective Dave Smith said $300 cash was taken. Police were still investigating and urged anyone with information to contact Whangarei police on (09) 430 4500.
