Police have named the man who died in a Northland crash involving a vehicle which was carrying two passengers in the boot
Cody Lloyd Cullen was killed in the crash at Puwera on Sunday.
The 21-year-old from Waipū was the sole occupant of a car which collided with a MitsubishiChallenger carrying eight people.
Five of the people in the Mitsubishi received moderate to serious injuries and three had minor injuries. They were taken to Whangārei Hospital after the crash. Two of the passengers were unrestrained in the boot of the vehicle.
Initially, a female and a male from the Challenger were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit before their conditions stabilised and were moved into a ward.
Cullen was heading north in a Nissan Muriel when his vehicle collided with the southbound Mitsubishi Challenger on the passing lane of State Highway One.
Cullen was the 20th person killed on Northland roads this year. Forty people were killed on the region's roads in the whole of 2017.
Police expressed sympathy to Cullen's family, saying their "thoughts are with his family at this difficult time".
