Person seriously injured in Palmerston North crash; one dead after Northland crash overnight

A person is in a serious condition and two others have moderate injuries following a two-vehicle crash near Palmerston North this afternoon.

All three have been taken to Palmerston North Hospital, and two more people are believed to have sustained minor injuries.

Police said authorities were called to the scene on Pahīatua Aokautere Rd, between Harrison Hill Rd and South Range Rd, just after 1pm today.

A police spokesperson said the road was now blocked.

In another crash, emergency services were called to Main North Rd, Woodend, between Sandhill and Woodend Beach roads about 1.40pm today.

A car reportedly hit a power pole, bringing lines down.

One person received serious injuries and another person suffered moderate injuries.

Diversions were put in place while emergency services worked at the scene, however the southbound lane reopened about 3pm.

Enquiries are continuing.

The Christmas holiday road toll currently stands at four.

A person died following a crash in the Northland town of Waimate North last night.

Police received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Te Ahu Ahu Rd at 8.08pm.

“Police can advise one person has died following the crash,” police said in a statement.

The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

On Friday night, a driver died after fleeing a police checkpoint in Whangārei.

On Saturday, a person died in a serious crash on Whakamaru Rd in the Bay of Plenty just before 1.30pm.

Another person died in a crash involving a car and a motorcyclist on SH25 southeast of the SH25A turnoff in the Coromandel Peninsula on Saturday.
