Another first division ticket has been sold in Northland.

Winning ticket sold in Whangarei

A ticket sold in Whangarei was one of three that each won $333,333 in Lotto First Division on Saturday night.

The winning ticket was sold at Countdown Regent in Whangarei and had not been claimed last night. Powerball was not struck and has rolled over to Wednesday night, where the jackpot will be $8 million. Strike Four has also rolled over to $200,000.

The winning Lotto numbers were 2, 12, 19, 34, 35 and 38, the bonus number 3 and Powerball number 9.

Meeting to discuss vehicle-free area

The Far North District Council, Te Hiku Community Board, police, Far North Reap and Far North Surf Rescue have jointly called another public meeting at Ahipara on Thursday. The meeting, starting 6pm at the golf club, will discuss establishing a vehicle-free area on the beach for six weeks of summer, from mid December to the end of January.

Safety zones are not new - one applies year-round at Cooper's Beach, with exemptions for some, including emergency services and commercial fishermen.

Sentencing likely this week

A man who pleaded guilty to murdering a Te Kao farmer is likely to be sentenced this week.
The case of Marcus Bax was called in the High Court callovers and Justice Kit Toogood said if there was no disputed facts hearing, sentencing might proceed on March 9. The 38-year-old murdered Peter Linder Nilsson, 77, on August 4 2016.

Burglary investigated

Police are investigating following a burglary at The Bakehouse Cafe in Dargaville.
The front glass door was smashed and the till taken about 3am on Saturday, police said.

Community board nominations open

Nominations to fill a vacancy on the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board (Kawakawa-Moerewa Subdivision) have opened.

The by-election is being held to replace Kelly Stratford, who was elected to the Far North District Council on February 17. Ms Stratford was elected to replace Willow-Jean Prime, who resigned after being elected a list Member of Parliament.

To be eligible to stand for the Community Board, candidates must be a New Zealand citizen and enrolled to vote anywhere in New Zealand. Candidates must also be nominated by two people who are registered on the Electoral Roll within Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board (Kawakawa-Moerewa Subdivision) area. The nomination period closes at noon March 28. The voting period will closes at noon on May 24.

Police open day

Police are opening their doors to the public, who can see first-hand the different aspects of policing.

It is the third time the open days have been held and this year they will focus on recruitment. On Sunday, March 11, Whangarei Station will open from 10am to 2pm and will include police dogs, the Armed Offenders Squad, police negotiating team vehicle, search and rescue boat and a guided tour of the station including the District Command Centre.

Dargaville Police station will open from 10am to 2pm and there will be tours of the station, a police dog, patrol cars and local staff.

At Simpson Park in Moerewa from 10am to 4pm there will be a chance to meet local police staff and recruiting officers, plus there will be patrol cars, activities for children and a BBQ.
