Volunteer’s work recognised
Northlander Takoha Ropati has been recognised for his work to rebuild touch rugby in Te Tai Tokerau. Ropati has taken Ngāti Hine touch from a single team into a full, multi-grade setup that caters to all ages. The improvements include clinics, wānanga, and a focus on bringing rangatahi through and keeping people connected. Ropati was one of five volunteers from across the country recognised under the Bunnings and Touch New Zealand’s Home Ground Heroes programme. Each volunteer received $5000 to put back into their local touch community.

Hakaru bridge restrictions
Kaipara District Council says immediate load restrictions have been introduced on the Hakaru bridge on Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Rd after a recent detailed inspection classified the bridge as highly critical. Everyday vehicles are able to use the bridge but heavy vehicles operating under permits, including High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMVs) or overweight loads, are not. Plans to replace the bridge are being brought forward, with the council working with NZTA to progress the project and aiming for completion by the end of 2026.
