A traditional Norwegian boat is rapidly taking shape in Russell but is still missing one vital thing - a name.
Northland charity Adventures for Good plans to set up a wooden boat-building course, alongside other training and maritime research opportunities, and has brought in an expert from Norway's far north
to help get the course off the ground.
Traditional boatbuilder Ulf Mikalsen is about a week away from finishing a clinker-style boat based on a popular 18th century Norwegian design. A shop at 22 York St, Russell, has been turned into a workshop that anyone is welcome to visit.
Adventures for Good member Jamie Gallant said the boat was almost complete but needed a name, so he was inviting Northlanders to suggest something suitable.
The ideal name would reflect the coming together of two different cultures from opposite ends of the globe to work together on a common goal, he said.
