Whangarei police were late yesterday hunting for a man who fired an air pistol in a city park.
A police cordon was put in place after a man was seen firing an air pistol in the park behind Whangarei Library, just before 1pm yesterday.
Police did not find the mandespite a high presence, including armed officers, at the cordon in place at Forum North, the library and access points to Cafler Park and the Rose Garden on Water St.
A woman notified the police about the man's behaviour about 12.45pm yesterday. She reported the man had fired some shots in the park then walked off toward the central business district.
He was described as Maori, of average height and build, wearing sunglasses, a long-sleeved striped top, and carrying what appeared to be a small, black air pistol.
