A freshened exterior appearance and a powerplant shared with the latest Golf GTI are among the upgrades for the Volkswagen Eos which arrives in New Zealand this month.
The Eos has been one of Volkswagen's highly successful niche models in New Zealand.
"The Eos has performed extremely well in the New Zealand market, being the No1-selling cabriolet since its launch in 2007," said Volkswagen NZ general manager Dean Sheed.
He believed the new model would live up to expectations . It was sophisticated and fun, with great attention to driving detail.
Eos was the first cabriolet-coupe worldwide with a five-piece CSC-Roof system (retractable hardtop), which gives the car a "best of both worlds" design - authentic cabriolet or dynamic coupe styling. At a touch, its folding steel roof switches from windproof luxury to windswept exhilaration in 25 seconds. The electro-hydraulic steel roof system features an integral sliding/tilting panoramic glass roof and a heated glass rear window.
The 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged direct-injection engine is the same as that used in the Golf GTI and Scirocco TSI models. It develops 155kW at 5300rpm with maximum torque of 280Nm available from 1700rpm to 5200rpm to deliver a top speed of 236km/h and 0-100km/h acceleration in 7.8secs. The turbo engine drives through a six-speed DSG transmission and official combined-cycle fuel consumption is 7.5 litres per 100km.
The new Eos has been re-designed to reflect Volkswagen's "design DNA" that is marked by clearly structured, horizontal lines. Extending between the new headlights now is a radiator grille protector consisting of three shiny black struts, each trimmed with a narrow chrome strip.
Halogen headlights are standard and Bi-xenon with cornering lights and LED daytime running lights and headlight-washing system are also as an option.
The rear has been re-worked with two-part LED rear lights and redesigned bumper.
Rear ParkPilot, rain sensor wipers and automatic driving light control with leaving-home function and manual coming-home function provide additional ease of driving.
The Eos has 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, with a new range of wheel options.
Standard features include ESP with counter-steering assistance, ABS, Traction Control System and Electronic Diff Lock, hill-hold, a comprehensive airbag network and safety-optimised front head restraints.
Providing increased safety as standard on all models are fog lamps featuring integrated cornering lights.
The interior fittings include decorative "Black Peak" elements (dark aluminium accents with chrome edging) for the dashboard and door trim panels. Sophisticated Vienna leather sports-comfort heated front seats are standard and have electrically adjustable lumbar support, and Napa leather can be substituted as an option.
Cruise control and climatronic two-zone air-conditioning are standard and there is a leather covered multi-function steering wheel with DSG gearshift paddles.
Numerous new technical details distinguish the 2011 Eos, including the Premium multifunction display with a large high-res colour touch screen with six-disc CD changer that is MP3 and WMA file compatible.
A Media Device Interface (MDI) multimedia socket with iPod adapter cable is standard as is mobile phone with Bluetooth hands-free provision which includes phonebook display.
Pricing for the upgraded Eos has yet to be announced.
