A Northland farm worker who became trapped in an effluent pond this morning is being treated in hospital for serious leg injuries from the incident.

Emergency services were called to the farm in Awanui, 7km north of Kaitaia, just after 9am where the man had been trapped in the effluent pond.

His leg had become stuck under a pump and a digger was needed to free him, said a Northern Fire Communications spokeswoman.

He was transported to Kaitaia Hospital for treatment.
