Far North four-wheel drive enthusiasts are doing their bit to have a good time, and support a worthy cause with a fun Project Promise fundraising event this weekend.
Opononi and District Lions Club, in association with the Kauri Coast 4 Wheel Drive Club is holding a Project Promise Hokianga 4WDSafari from Friday to Sunday through the backblocks of the stunning west coast around the Waimamaku area.
Organisers are billing it as a fun, family event, although competitors will hope it gets dirty, with plenty of mud and water to go through.
There is a limit of 60 vehicles for the event, which will wind through farms, rivers and mud tracks, with entry $160 for a driver and passenger and $50 for every extra passenger, with children under 14 $25.
All drivers must be an up-to-date member of a 4WD club that is linked with the NZFWD Association. However, a temporary $30 weekend membership can be bought.
The event will be based at the Waiotemarama complex, with a camping area on site.
For more information and entry details ring 09 4057490 or 0274 222251, or email opo4wd@maxnet.
Project Promise is a campaign run by the Northland Community Foundation to raise $3 million over the next three years to build a new cancer-treatment unit in Whangarei. The oncology unit would make life easier for Northland's cancer patients, although some would still have to travel to Auckland for other treatments such as radiotherapy.
