An 82-year-old Far North woman has been taken to hospital after a head-on crash police say was caused by another vehicle failing to give way on a one-lane bridge.
The smash occurred on Purerua Rd, north of Kerikeri, about 12.50pm yesterday. A police spokesman said the woman, driving a Holden Barina, had been heading home towards Purerua when she saw a Mitsubishi ute approaching just before a one-way bridge. She slowed to a near stop but the driver of the ute did not see her, leading to a head-on collision. She had the right of way.
She was shaken but thought to have suffered only minor injuries. She was taken to Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa. Police are talking to the other driver, who was uninjured, and have yet to decide on charges.
