A log truck driver was lucky to escape severe injury when his truck rolled on a forestry road in the Mid North early on Monday.
The accident occurred before 6am in pine forest accessed off Davis Rd in Pokapu, southwest of Moerewa. St John Ambulance, fire and police attended, withKawakawa fire chief Wayne Martin saying the driver was ''pretty lucky'' not to be more seriously injured.
His cab was crushed and the truck was close to rolling off a 20-30m high bank. He was not trapped but suffered suspected spinal injuries.
Workmates were able to help get him into the ambulance. Early morning fog meant the Northland Rescue Helicopter was unable to fly so he was taken by road initially to Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa.
The pine plantation is owned by Ngati Hine Forestry Trust and managed by Hancock Forest Management.
