Activists opposed to the caging of chickens at Craddock Farms, northwest of Pukekohe, have been making their views known in Whangarei.
About 10 vegans dressed in chicken suits and who belong to the "Stop Craddock Farms" activist group protested outside the downtown office of businessman Wally Yovich yesterday.
Mr Yovichis a director of Craddock Farms, which is planning to build a colony cage facility at Patumahoe.
The protest was the group's third in Whangarei in the past six months. Spokeswoman Deirdre Sims said the setting up of colony and layer cages was a backward step and that the group would continue its protests until Craddock Farms withdrew its plan.
She said group members handed out leaflets and free vegetarian cupcakes to the public.
Craddock Farms managing director Stefan Craddock said, "While we understand people's right to protest, the fact remains that it is the type of eggs people buy that dictates how they are produced, not the other way around."
In future affordable eggs would be produced in colony farms that adhered to a new national welfare code.
