Firefighters had to haul pumps hundreds of metres into a forest where a hydraulic fuel leak set a log harvesting machine alight south of Kawakawa.
Kawakawa chief fire officer Wayne Martin said the brigade was called out to an acacia forest on Mihirata Rd, Motatau, about 4.30am yesterday. Forestry contractors started
the machine and it caught fire after hydraulic fuel had leaked onto its exhaust.
The forest was relatively damp, but the burning fuel also set nearby vegetation on fire.
he brigade had to haul two pumps through the forest to use a nearby water source and dampen down the surrounding area.
