Just in time for the weekend comes a heavy rain and flood warning for Northland, with another round of unsettled weather spreading across the country as the next low moves in from the Tasman Sea.
The MetService said the blocked weather pattern means places that havealready experienced a lot of unsettled weather are likely to be exposed to more over the next few days.
MetService media and communications meteorologist Daniel Corbett said the wet weather will put a dampener on weekend plans and more importantly, further heavy rain on saturated ground could pose a flood risk across parts of New Zealand, including Northland.
Mr Corbett said the active trough will spread a band of rain and strong northeast winds over the far north of the North Island today and a severe weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for parts of Northland.
He said the heavy rain was predicted to start from about noon today, and it could dump up to 80mm of rain on parts of the region in the following 12 to 15 hours.
The rainfall could peak at up to 15mm over a two-hour period, and gale force winds could also batter the east coast during the same period.
However, Mr Corbett said, the weather would likely revert to showers tomorrow.
Tomorrow, the band of heavy persistent rain will slide down over the remainder of the North Island to reach northern and eastern parts of the South Island.
Northland's rainfall has been well above average during the past month. Whangarei recorded 203.6mm of rain in July, compared to the monthly average of 171.5mm and has already had 45.8mm so far this month.
Kaikohe recorded 275.4mm of rain last month, compared to its average for the month of 181.8mm, and so far this month 36.2mm had fallen on the town.
