Northland's road toll has risen to 13 after the death of a woman involved in a crash over the weekend at Ruakaka.

The woman was involved in a single vehicle crash on Peter Snell Rd about 11.30pm on Saturday night.

Police said the vehicle left the road and rolled with two others also suffering serious injuries. The woman was taken to Auckland Hospital but died this morning. It was the fourth death from crashes in Northland over the weekend.

A 20-year-old man died after a crash on View Rd on Friday about 11.40pm. Police had contacted family members and have released his name today. He was Blake Edward Hilton, of Hikurangi. Two others were treated by ambulance officers at the scene.

Police are yet to name two German tourists killed in a crash at Kaeo on Saturday.

Officers were working through the German Consulate to make contact with family of the 30-year-old male and 24-year-old female.

The duo were in a people-mover vehicle that collided with a truck a few kilometres north of Kaeo.

The truck driver, a man from the Kaeo area, was trapped and initially in a critical condition with significant leg injuries.

Firefighters cut the doors off the cab and used strops to pull the vehicles apart to free him.

His condition improved during the rescue and he was responding to his helpers.

He was airlifted to Auckland Hospital by the Northland Rescue Helicopter, which landed in a nearby paddock.

Firefighters also cut the doors and roof off the people-mover but its occupants could not be saved.

Sergeant Haydn Korach, of Mid North police, said it appeared the people-mover had been heading south when it crossed the centreline.

The driver of the northbound truck had tried to avoid a collision.

Serious crash investigators continue to look at the circumstances of all the fatal crashes.

At this time last year, the road toll in Northland was eight.
