Search and Rescue coordinator Senior Sergeant Cliff Metcalfe said the alarm was raised about 2pm yesterday when it was reported one person was in the water.
There were two people in the boat that was near Flat Island, which lies between Stephenson Island and the Cavalli Islands.
They managed to get the man back on board and motored to shore at Te Ngaere Bay but he could not be resuscitated.
Police name boy killed
Police have named the 9-year-old boy who died after being hit by a car while riding a bike in Houhora on Saturday.
He was Te Paina Herewini Tahitahi. Police said the boy was hit while riding on Kimberly Rd about 1.30pm. Police are still investigating and have not laid charges yet.
Beekeepers need president
The Far North Beekeepers' Club has been put "on hold" for lack of a president, and because this is a busy time of the year.
