Some Whangarei councillors want the Hundertwasser Art Centre project scuttled. The HAC proposal would see an art gallery/museum built in Whangarei as a tourism attraction, in the style of the late Austrian and New Zealand artist Friedrich Hundertwasser.
The proposed building is based on a sketch by Hundertwasser, and has theblessing of the Austrian Hundertwasser Non Profit Foundation.
The project will cost $13 million - $8 million will come from ratepayers or council-sourced funding, and $5 million needs to be raised from outside sources.
Councillors are planning to debate the issue next Wednesday.
We suggest you also search for the pros and cons of the project online, and then vote in our poll in which we ask the question: Should we build the Hundertwasser Art Centre?
